Destiny History

It all began back in the Spring of 1993. After each throwing successful events for the previous two years under the nameplates of Mayhem, Adam & Eve, Cybernetics and Underground Resistance, the owners and partners of each of these companies joined forces to become Destiny Productions. In the early days the partners included OS/2, Eryk Sands, Jeff Haynes and Chris Conroy (A/C). Over the years, Jeff, Chris, and Eryk moved on to their own projects and Destiny is now fully operated by OS/2 and originalVIBE.

The first Destiny event took place on a balmy July night at an indoor/outdoor location called Isabella Gardens located just off Hwy 400 at King Road. Even though the party was 45 minutes out of the city and two other events took place downtown the same night, close to 1000 people made the journey and helped establish what is now Canada’s longest running rave promotions company! Building on the success of D1, Destiny 2 featured our very first international guest, Jon The Dentist (back then he was called The Dentist from Delbosca) and attracted over 1500 people. It wasn’t long after Destiny 2 that we decided to begin a weekly event that became legendary in its own right, Destiny Fridays. The first Destiny Fridays events took place at The Party Centre downtown on Church, but we soon outgrew this spot and moved to the very memorable 31 Commissioners Street (its now a field!). Many people will remember the shuttle van with the couch in the back and those washrooms we just never got around to cleaning… but hey, we were young and everyone had a great time!

After a few more successful events it became time for the next step, The World Trance Festival. Since nobody had ever attempted a weekend rave in Ontario before, we were breaking new ground. As the weekend approached and things looked great, everyone was highly pumped for whatever might happen… who could have predicted a TORNADO! Not only did the twister rip through around midnight Friday and shred three circus big tops, but it also managed to destroy about a hundred grand worth of sound and lighting equipment (thank god for insurance!). Party over you ask? No way! By 5pm the next day, our good friends at Westbury National Show Systems had patched together enough equipment for one kicking stage and we were able to get back to business. If you were there to experience the event you will certainly agree that it was one memorable time. We have been told by hundreds of people that not only did they have the time of their lives, but the vibe that was created as a result of everyone surviving the whole disaster was one of the best they have ever felt!

The following year saw our jump into the upper level of North American promoters as both our ability to attract great talent and big crowds really hit home. Not wanting to lose sight of our roots, we then made a pact not to go the commercial route, but rather to follow the course we had already set. This course was one we felt was directed by our loyal fans and by paying close attention to what people really wanted from an event and not just how much they were willing to pay. By keeping an ear to the ground and an eye on the street, we felt we could really accomplish something great!

Well, we think we have done just that. With the World Trance Festival now renamed The World Electronic Music Festival to more fully represent what it is all about, we now attract thousands of people from across North America. We are sure that if we were not offering what people wanted we would be long gone by now, but this does not mean we are not still listening… things are changing within the scene at a frantic pace and we can’t keep up with it all! We therefore encourage each and every one of you to make comments on our past, present and future, both in a positive manner and constructively critical. We believe that Destiny is for your enjoyment, and with your input we will make it the best we can!
